Picture of ANTHONIJ RUPERT BLEND 2017
Inviting melange of plush and plump black and red berry fruits, blueberries, spice and chocolate on the nose. Those same fruits and flavours glide seamlessly from the nose onto the palate. There’s a subtle note of fennel or anise but with rich black cherry and plum notes adding succulence. Reigning in this abundance is a frame of oak and tannin which provides a gentle, muscular squeeze. Textured, rich and rounded but elegantly robust, there’s a beautiful complexity and breadth to this wine. The cocoa powder nuance is present in the long, tapered finish. One made for cellaring but also for immediate enjoyment.

Ripe black berry fruits, licorice and a trace of florality can be found on the nose. The palate offers up those same plush, ripe black berries, cherry and licorice along with a deeper, dark herb and earthy element. The sensation is one of dryness, almost a perception of being lean and austere but that’s because the wine is still tightly furled and reined in. It’s supple, sinewy, succulent and rewarding with the fruit and oak seamlessly meshed. The grip is firm without being forceful or too bold or muscular. A wine that needs time to show its true beauty.

A subtle trace of violets and graphite underpins the bolder aromas of blue and black fruit. Similarly, on the palate a subtle spice element tempers the ripe, rich, rounded and juicy mouthful. A cocoa powder nuance lends the overall palate a Black Forest gateaux vibe because of the black cherry vibrance. Elegant, cohesive and structured with the oak supporting the fruit beautifully. Lovely leashed power and restraint followed by a long tail.

Genteel, suave and refined, t he nose is complex, layered with cassis, earth, hint of herbs, black cherry and spice. That same elegance is found in the mouth, sleek, supple and velvety on entry. The next element to become apparent is the harmony and balance of the ripe cassis, black cherry and dark berry fruit with succulent acid freshness. Afterwards, the herb, tobacco leaf, cedar and nutty notes make themselves known, along with the appropriately firm angularity of the tannin frame provided by oak maturation. Thrilling, taut and energetic, it’s drinking well now but will comfortably handled a decade or more in bottle.

A subtle floral hint lifts the rich nose of fruitcake, black berries, herb and peppery spice. Ripe, soft-textured and juicy black fruit is the first flavour in the mouth. Vibrant spice – nutmeg, pepper and cinnamon – then make their presence felt, followed by a creamy oak note. The wood, which is harmoniously knit with the fruit and fresh acid, lends both stature, frame and without taking over or dominating. Deeply rewarding with rounded mouthfeel and a long elegant tail. Genteel and refined.

Citrus aromas with stone fruit, lemongrass and a light dusting of gravel. That same lemon and lemongrass vibrance is found on the palate which is both bright, taut and tangy. Lively acidity keeps the nectarine, white peach and zesty citrus flavours front and centre, but with a flinty, petrichor edge. Compact and firm, the texture and mouthfeel display a delightful tension that adds to the structure of this young wine. Lovely tension of opposites in its youth but it will evolve, becoming richer and fuller with age and careful cellaring.

Gentle notes of nectarine and limestone, with a hint of vanilla biscuit and orange peel. The subtlety continues on the palate. Initially, it is energetic and vivacious, with crisp, bright, and lively lime and orange notes, complemented by vibrant acidity that lends freshness. Then, a broader, rich yet restrained quality develops, revealing a subtle creamy nuttiness tinged with a light vanilla note. Nothing dominates, and the wine displays a harmonious balance of oak, fruit, and acidity, which lingers persistently but not assertively. Overall, it is a wine that whispers seductively rather than shouts.

A fruit salad bouquet of peach, apricot with fruit blossom perfume and honey with a sprinkling of spice. The palate displays that same generosity – with ample peach, nectarine and loquat to be found, alongside rich marzipan and honeyed notes and even a taste of creamy chamomile. Ripe, rounded, broad and mouth filling, it doesn’t become too full or bold since a bright line of acid keeps it fresh, lively and vibrant. A well balanced, full-flavoured but nuanced and composed mouthful with texture and length in spades. Thrilling.

A forthcoming and delicately seductive nose reveals a delightful interplay of sweet, ripe cherry and blueberry aromas. A subtle hint of rose petals and a whisper of shy spice further enhance its allure. On the palate, the wine opens with a succulent and fresh entry, but it quickly transforms into something far more intriguing than the nose suggests. It defies expectations of lightness or overt fruitiness, instead presenting a sleek, sinewy, and powerful profile with a lithe muscularity. The fruit profile deepens into darker tones—black cherry, plum, and even prune—accentuated by a prominent liquorice note. The wine boasts impressive density and layered depth. Tannins provide structure and stature, but they remain refined and unobtrusive. Altogether, this is a cohesive, rewarding, and thoroughly delicious wine, leaving a lingering and satisfying finish.

Both the nose and palate of this wine impress with abundance: a plethora of aromas and flavours – but nothing dominates. Whiffs of marmalade, lime zest, cream and nutty cashew and macadamia with an edge of dust and flint. The palate replicates those in flavour form, along with roasted or grilled peach, eucalyptus honey and brûléed orange. Despite this melange, the wine is structured and harmonious, yet supple and rounded in its textured, layered mouthfeel. Complex, certainly, but elegant, graceful and sophisticated with impressive poise throughout. The use of lees and oak aging lends additional dimension and interest and only means that the blend will age with distinction.
